Who can apply for a Blue Light Card?
You can apply for a Blue Light Card if you have been employed and paid by the following organisations. You’ll need to provide a form of ID that shows your name, employer, job role and date that is within the last 3 months:
The Health Service (NHS): Including Ambulance Service, NHS Dental Practice & Pharmacy Workers.
Police & Fire – Including HM Prison Service, Highway Traffic Officers & Firefighters.
Home Office – Including those in the Border Force, Immigration Enforcement and UK Visas and Immigration.
Defense – Including HM Armed Forces, MoD Civil Servants, MoD Fire Service, MoD Police.
Social Care: Including Care Company Workforce, Social Workers, those working in Care Homes or Residential Care, in the Council in the care sector or as a foster carer.
Of if you are part of one of the below volunteer groups:
Volunteers – For first aid and rescue volunteer services. Including HM Coastguard, RNLI, Search and Rescue, 4×4 Response, Blood Bikes, St Andrews Ambulance or St John Ambulance.
Or are retired from one of the below:
Retired – For Armed Forces Veterans, Police Officers, Firefighters or a member of the NHS who has retired.
How much does the Blue Light Card cost?
The Blue Light Card costs £4.99 which includes two years of membership with a physical card as well as online access to all of their deals. Considering how much can be saved using their offers this is likely to be worth it for almost anyone who is eligible, provided they remember to use the service.
How do I apply for a Blue Light Card?
You can apply for the service directly on the Blue Light Website. Provided that you meet the eligibility requirements directly on their website. You’ll need to provide your personal details and provide proof that you are eligible such as a payslip or ID card that is in date and shows your affiliation.

Blue Light Card FAQs
Can my family use my Blue Light Card?
No, discounts are only allowed to be used by the member named on the Blue Light Card. When shopping in person, the retailer may ask you to prove that you own the Blue Light Card that you are using. The service also does not allow sharing codes online, and has previously banned users they found to be sharing discount codes.
The service also doesn’t allow family members or spouses to get their own card unless they also meet the eligibility criteria themselves and so can get their own card.
Can medical students & student nurses get a Blue Light Card?
As you need an ID that is affiliated with the NHS, you will likely need to wait until your clinic year. You’ll need a way of proving your entitlement such as an NHS email address or hospital trust ID. Unfortunately your normal student ID won’t be enough proof for Blue Light Cards to verify you as NHS staff.
Can you have a Blue Light Card when retired?
Yes you can apply for a Blue Light Card when retired from the armed forces, police, fire service or the NHS.
To sign up once retired from the NHS:
- Visit the Blue Light Card homepage and click register
- Where it says ‘Service’ select NHS and press Start
- Under the new screen select or type in ‘Retired’ as your trust/division
- Under the job position/title enter your most recent role before you retired
- Fill out the rest of your personal details (name, address, DOB, etc.)
- Next you’ll need to upload your ID, this can be your P60 certificate, showing that you receive an NHS pension
